Moonfall on HBO Max: Watch It or Skip It?
You’ve heard of chick flicks for the longest time but Moonfall falls under a similar yet very different category. Moonfall, directed and produced by Roland Emmerich is a disaster flick, which might just be our latest obsession. This film has received several mixed reviews from critics and audiences, which is why we’re here to help you out. As you journey through this piece, you will be able to make the ultimate decision: Stream or Skip Moonfall.
Moonfall’s Plotline: Was it a Hit or a Miss?

Moonfall’s plot follows a conspiracy theorist, K.C Houseman, and two former astronauts. They soon discover the hidden truth about the Moon when it leaves orbit. This sends everything into a frenzy and also causes global panic. Usually, successful science fiction films, even disaster flicks, tend to focus on one concept, but Moonfall does it differently. Even if you just watch the trailer, it is two minutes and sixteen seconds of pure chaos, which reflects in the plot and execution of the film. The entirety of the film is a little underwhelming for an end-of-the-world concept, but let’s dig in a little deeper before you decide to stream it or skip it.

Watch Moonfall for Roland Emmerich

If you don’t know who Ronald Emmerich is, we can help you out! Emmerich is a German director, producer, and screenwriter widely popular for his work on science fiction and disaster films. Chances are, you have watched and loved at least one of his films in your life so far. Some of his work includes Godzilla (1998), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), and White House Down (2013), along with one of the most famous films made to date, 2012, which was released in 2009. Almost all of his films have been widely successful and hence Emmerich is known as the “Master of Disaster” in the film industry. Undoubtedly, Moonfall has some classic Emmerich moments, but is that enough for you to sit through almost two hours of this sci-fi film?
Moonfall’s Extravagant Budget Versus Box Office Numbers

Moonfall had an impressive budget, which was a given because it was a Roland Emmerich film coupled with being a disaster film. The budget rounded up to around $140 million, and Moonfall almost broke a box office record, but not in the way it hoped to. Moonfall became one of the biggest box office flops of all time, truly making it a disaster. Here, you can see the complete breakdown of how badly it performed at the box office. In an interview with ScreenRant, Emmerich said, “I mean, if the movie is successful, we’ll do a sequel or two sequels. It was always imagined as a trilogy.” It’s probably a safe bet to make that this trilogy will be shelved for the foreseeable future.

Moonfall’s Saving Grace: Was There any Redeeming Factor?
Yes! We know that answer doesn’t seem very believable right now. Especially not after you go through the box office numbers. However, despite everything, Moonfall did have two things that could possibly save it. Number one, the cast. A versatile cast that includes Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, Donald Sutherland, and Charlie Plummer amongst others can be one of the reasons you decide to watch this film. If not that, we still have number two in our arsenal. A visually stunning film. Even if the plot and performances underwhelm you, the visuals will not disappoint. There is no doubt that a lot of effort went into making this film, given the size of the production and its budget.
If you made it this far, there must be something that kept you hooked. Have you heard that saying “it was so bad, it was almost good?” We believe that applies to Moonfall. And for that reason, contribute to the little money that they’ve made, and stream it!
